Mentoring

Mentors Make A Difference

Mentors can make a difference in a teen parent’s life by:
  • Improving self-esteem
  • Keeping him/her in school
  • Improving academic skills
  • Introducing him/her to new resources
  • Providing support for new behaviors, attitudes and ambitions

Of 400 high school students with mentors who participated in a Louis Harris poll*:
  • 73% said mentors helped them raise their goals and expectations
  • 87% went to college or planned to attend college within two years of graduation
  • 59% improved their grades
  • 87% said they felt some benefit from their mentoring relationship

What is a Mentor

A mentor is a guide, motivator, advocate, role model, coach, a friend and a good listener.

Mentors help the one in his or her care to grow personally and professionally, motivate, provides support, guidance, encouragement and growth opportunities based on the needs of the person he or she is mentoring.

A Successful Mentor Must:
  • Be a friend- someone who is a role model and can provide support and gentle guidance. Don’t act like a parent, authority figure or preach about values. DO focus on establishing a bond, a sense of equality and mutual enjoyment of shared time.
  • Have realistic goals and expectations- focus on the teen parent and his or her overall development, center your relationship on trust, and emphasize friendship over performance.
  • Be positive
  • Be able to enjoy and communicate with young people
  • Be caring, an active listener, and a teacher
  • Be a guide and coach
