| Mentoring |
 |
| Almost
anyone can be a mentor and you can make a difference in
a child's life. |
 |
| What
is a Mentor |
| A
mentor is a teacher, guide, motivator, advocate, counselor,
protector, sponsor, role model, communicator, coach, a
friend and a good listener. |
|
 |
| A
mentor helps the one in his or her care to grow personally
and professionally, provides support, guidance, encouragement
and growth opportunities based on the needs of the person
he or she is mentoring. |
 |
| A
Successful Mentor Must: |
|
| Be
a friend- someone who is a role model and can provide
support and gentle guidance. Don’t act like a
parent, authority figure or preach about values. DO
focus on establishing a bond, a sense of equality and
mutual enjoyment of shared time.
Have
realistic goals and expectations- focus on the school
age parent and his or her overall development, center
your relationship on trust, and emphasize friendship
over performance.
Have
fun together- show that your reliable and committed.
Focusing on fun in the beginning can lead to “serious”
activities later.
Give
your mentee a voice in deciding activities- Give a range
of
choices. Listen. Emphasize that her or his enjoyment
is important to you.
Be
positive
Be
able to enjoy and communicate with young people
Be
caring, an active listener, and a teacher
Be
a guide and coach |
